Madeira: A Stunning Island of Mountains, Forests & Ocean Views 🌿🌊
Madeira completely won me over with its dramatic landscapes, breathtaking viewpoints, lush forests, and charming coastal towns. Every day felt like a postcard come to life. 😍
Getting There
For our trip to Madeira, we flew with Lufthansa via Munich and returned with Wizz Air via Budapest.
Getting around the island was easy using Uber, which worked well throughout our stay.
Where We Stayed
The Vine Hotel
We stayed at The Vine, a beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of Funchal.
I booked it through Agoda, although I always recommend comparing prices in Google’s incognito mode, as you can sometimes find better deals.
The hotel offers:
Excellent central location
Stylish modern design
Great service
Easy access to restaurants, shops, and attractions
It was the perfect base for exploring the island.
Guided Island Tours
We booked two full-day guided tours through GetYourGuide, one covering the eastern side of the island and another exploring the western side.
Both tours were excellent, with knowledgeable guides and stops at Madeira’s most iconic attractions.
East Madeira Tour – Link
Pico do Arieiro
One of the most spectacular viewpoints on the island.
A short walk rewards you with incredible views above the clouds. Standing there feels like being on top of the world. 🥰
Levada dos Balcões
A short and easy forest walk along one of Madeira’s famous levadas (water channels).
At the end of the trail is a stunning viewpoint overlooking deep green valleys and rugged mountains.
One of the highlights here was the adorable little birds that land on visitors’ hands looking for food. 😍
Santana Traditional Houses
A charming village featuring Madeira’s famous triangular thatched-roof houses.
Several of the restored houses are open to visitors and include local craft and souvenir shops.
The colorful houses are incredibly photogenic and worth visiting.
Ponta de São Lourenço
This peninsula offers some of Madeira’s most dramatic coastal scenery.
The cliffs, rugged landscapes, and endless ocean views create an unforgettable experience. 🤩
West Madeira Tour – Link
Fanal Forest
One of the most magical places on Madeira.
This ancient forest is filled with centuries-old trees whose twisted shapes create an almost mystical atmosphere.
Fog often drifts through the forest, making it feel like something straight out of a fantasy movie. 👌🏻
Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools
These natural volcanic pools are one of Madeira’s most famous attractions.
Crystal-clear ocean water flows into the pools, creating a unique place to swim while surrounded by dramatic lava formations. 💦💙
Seixal Beach
Without a doubt one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.
The combination of black volcanic sand, lush green mountains, and the Atlantic Ocean creates a truly spectacular setting. 😍
Toboggan Ride – A Madeira Tradition
One of Madeira’s most unique attractions is the famous Monte Toboggan Ride.
The route descends approximately 2 kilometers from Monte and takes about 10 minutes.
A few helpful tips:
Tickets cannot be purchased in advance
Payment is cash only
Up to three people can ride together
The line can be long, but it moves quickly
We paid €35 for two people.
It’s a fun and unusual experience that has become one of Madeira’s most iconic traditions.
Restaurants We Loved
A Parreira
A fantastic place to experience traditional Madeiran culture.
The restaurant offers local cuisine accompanied by live folk dancing and music.
The full menu, including food, drinks, and alcohol, costs around €30 per person, although individual dishes can also be ordered.
The show starts around 9:00 PM.
Reservations are highly recommended – Link
Design Centre Nini Andrade Silva
A beautiful fine-dining restaurant located inside a historic fortress overlooking the sea.
The setting is stunning, the dishes are beautifully presented, and the overall experience feels very special.
Reservations are recommended.
Uva Restaurant at The Vine
Located on the rooftop of our hotel.
Excellent food, beautiful city views, and a great atmosphere.
Definitely worth booking in advance.
Exploring Funchal Old Town
Zona Histórica do Funchal
One of my favorite areas in Madeira.
The historic center is full of narrow streets, colorful buildings, cozy restaurants, and lively atmosphere.
It’s the perfect place for an evening stroll, enjoying local food, and soaking in the charm of Madeira.
Funchal Municipal Garden
One of the charming spots we discovered in Funchal was the Funchal Municipal Garden.
It’s a small but beautiful garden located on the main street, close to the city’s cathedral and just a short walk from our hotel.
In the evenings, when we returned from our daily adventures, there were often local performances taking place in the garden. It created a wonderful atmosphere and was a lovely way to end the day.
From what our guides told us, Madeira loves celebrating. The island hosts festivals and events throughout the year, often centered around flowers, wine, food, music, and local traditions. It’s definitely worth checking what festivals are happening during your visit, you might stumble upon something special.
Internet & Connectivity
We used an Airalo eSIM throughout our trip, and it worked perfectly across the island.
The setup was simple, coverage was reliable, and we had no issues staying connected during our travels.
Final Thoughts
Madeira truly felt like a magical island. 🌿💙
From dramatic mountain landscapes and cloud-covered peaks to black-sand beaches, ancient forests, charming villages, and vibrant local culture, every day offered something new to discover.
The island combines stunning scenery, excellent food, friendly people, and a relaxed, joyful atmosphere that makes it incredibly easy to fall in love with.
Madeira was simply perfect. 😍👌🏻
Enjoy your travels!
