Amazing Bolivia 🇧🇴 – La Paz & the Uyuni Salt Flats
As part of our 3-week South America trip, we spent 3 days in Bolivia. We came especially to visit the famous Uyuni Salt Flats 🧂
We arrived in La Paz from Cusco, Peru, on an overnight bus. The journey was surprisingly comfortable! The seats were large, fully reclining, and I slept really well during the trip. 😴
We booked online with Transzela. The ticket cost around 45$ per person.
Where We Stayed in La Paz
We booked a guesthouse located right on the famous Witches’ Market street:
Hostal La Posada De La Abuela
A simple but charming guesthouse with an excellent location. We left our suitcases there while we went on our 2-night Uyuni trip. They also offer luggage storage if needed.
We mainly booked it so we could shower, rest, and have a place to leave our luggage before and after the tour. The price was around 40$ per night.
La Paz City Tour
We booked a guided tour of La Paz through GetYourGuide.
The guide was excellent! We visited the famous Witches’ Market, rode several cable car routes across the city, and explored the historic center.
It was fascinating, highly recommended, and definitely worth it. 👌🏻
Tour price was around 10$ per person.
Uyuni Salt Flats Tour
We booked our Uyuni Salt Flats experience through GetYourGuide.
The package included:
Overnight bus transportation
Meals
Full-day Uyuni tour
The buses were excellent and spacious, and I slept very well on both overnight journeys.
The bus rides are separate from the actual tour. In the evening, you need to make your own way to the bus station in La Paz, where your tickets are waiting at the counter.
When we arrived in Uyuni early in the morning, around 6:00 AM, a company representative was waiting for us. She gathered everyone from the tour group and took us to a restaurant for the breakfast included in the tour.
There was quite a long waiting period before the tour started, and we didn’t actually begin until around 9:00 AM.
Exploring the Uyuni Salt Flats
The tour itself was fantastic! 🤩
We were divided into groups of six people per jeep.
Our first stop was the famous Train Cemetery, filled with abandoned historic locomotives.
From there, we continued to a salt-processing facility with a souvenir shop before heading into the vast white expanse of the salt flats.
The Uyuni Salt Flats are enormous and unlike anything I’ve ever seen.
Throughout the day we stopped for:
Creative perspective photos
Lunch
The incredible Cactus Island
Scenic viewpoints
Sunset over the salt flats
Our guide was excellent, and the entire day was perfectly organized. 👌🏻
The sunset was absolutely magical.
After sunset, our driver took us back to the bus station for the overnight journey back to La Paz.
Alternative Option
For anyone who prefers to book the transportation separately and reserve the tour directly with a local company in Uyuni:
Back to La Paz
We arrived back in La Paz early in the morning and returned to the guesthouse for a shower, breakfast, and some rest.
Later that afternoon, we headed to the airport to continue our South American adventure in Argentina.
Transportation & Internet
Uber
Uber wasn’t very reliable in La Paz.
When we first arrived, we couldn’t find an available driver. However, when we needed transportation to the airport, we successfully booked an Uber fairly quickly.
eSIM
We used an eSIM purchased through Trip.com.
It worked well during our travels and made it easy to stay connected.
Final Thoughts
This was a short but perfectly planned trip.
We loved both colorful, vibrant La Paz and the unique landscapes of Uyuni. 🤩
The Salt Flats are truly one of the most extraordinary places in the world and were absolutely worth the journey.
Enjoy!
