A Long Layover in Ethiopia on the Way to Japan 🇪🇹✈️

On my way to Japan, I had a long layover in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, thanks to Ethiopian Airlines.

One of the main reasons I chose this route was curiosity, I wanted to turn the stopover into a mini travel experience.

And it was absolutely worth it. 😁

We flew with Ethiopian Airlines, and everything went smoothly. For layovers longer than 8 hours, the airline provides a complimentary hotel, which made the experience even more comfortable.

Instead of just waiting at the airport, we ended up discovering a completely new country.

Arrival in Addis Ababa

After landing, we received a hotel voucher at the airport and joined a shared shuttle with other transit passengers heading to the hotel.

The hotel was modern, large, and very comfortable, with full board included.

After checking in and resting briefly, we went for breakfast and contacted our local guide, Emmanuel – +251 94 209 4304

Exploring with Our Guide

Our guide, Emmanuel, picked us up after breakfast, and we started our day trip.

Debre Zeyit (Bishoftu) 🌿

Our first stop was Bishoftu (also known as Debre Zeyit), a lakeside town about 45 minutes from Addis Ababa.

The drive itself was fascinating, watching everyday life in Ethiopia unfold along the road.

In Bishoftu, we walked around the lakes and enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere. The scenery was beautiful and full of life: birds, cows, goats, and locals gathered by the water.

At one point, we met a group of local women enjoying traditional coffee outdoors, which felt very authentic and warm.

It was a simple but very special moment.

Back in Addis Ababa 🇪🇹

After returning to the capital, we explored the city a bit more.

We visited a lively local market filled with color, sound, and movement. We even stopped for coffee at one of the small stalls inside the market, an authentic and memorable experience.

Later, we tried some local samosas, which were delicious.

We also walked near one of the main churches in the city and then continued driving around different neighborhoods while our guide shared insights about Ethiopian culture, traditions, and daily life.

Emmanuel was incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and passionate about his country, which made the experience even better.

Ethiopian Food & Cultural Evening 🍽️🎶

After a full day of exploring, we returned to the hotel to freshen up before our evening program.

Later, Emmanuel took us to a traditional Ethiopian restaurant with live performances.

The interior design was beautiful, and the atmosphere was lively and festive.

We enjoyed a huge plate of injera, the traditional Ethiopian flatbread, served with a variety of dishes.

It was absolutely delicious and a unique dining experience. 🤤

Throughout the evening, there were traditional music and dance performances that made the experience even more special.

Back to the Airport ✈️

After dinner, Emmanuel kindly drove us back to the airport for our continuing flight to Japan.

Final Thoughts

This short stopover in Ethiopia turned into one of the most unexpected and memorable parts of the journey.

Instead of just passing through, we got a real glimpse into the country—its landscapes, its culture, its food, and its people.

From lakeside towns and bustling markets to traditional meals and cultural performances, it was a full and meaningful experience packed into a single day.

It made me appreciate how much you can discover, even in a short layover, when you choose the right route. ✨
