Our 3-Week China Itinerary

2 days in Beijing
2 days in Chengdu

We flew with Azerbaijan Airlines, with a layover in Baku. On the outbound flight, we left the airport for a few hours and really enjoyed exploring the city. To leave the airport, we had to obtain a visa on arrival, which cost around $30.

Visa

I have a European passport, so I was able to enter China visa-free for up to 30 days. Be sure to check that this policy is still in effect before your trip.

Internet & eSIM

I purchased an eSIM through Trip.com. It was the cheapest option I found: 30GB for 30 days. I ended up using around 20GB.

It worked perfectly throughout the country and, most importantly, did not require a VPN. I could access Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Google without any issues. However, TikTok and some other websites did not work.

Make sure to install and activate the eSIM before arriving in China.

Essential Apps

Before traveling, I downloaded:

Alipay – for payments
DiDi – for taxis and transportation
WeChat – for communicating with hotels
AMap – navigation (much better than Google Maps in China)
Trip.com – train tickets, attractions, hotels, and travel recommendations

I highly recommend downloading and verifying all apps before leaving your home country.

Credit Card Issues with Alipay

After several days of frequent DiDi rides, our CAL credit card was blocked due to suspected fraud. Apparently, this is a common issue because some credit card companies flag Alipay as suspicious activity.

Even though we had notified the card company before traveling, we were unable to get the card reactivated during the trip.

Fortunately, our other credit card worked perfectly with Alipay and became our primary payment method.

My advice: bring several credit cards in case one gets blocked.

Cash & Currency Exchange

Cash was accepted everywhere we visited.

We exchanged money at the airport in Beijing, but the exchange rate was poor and the fees were high.

Later, we exchanged money at a local bank in China and received almost the exact Google exchange rate with no commission. The downside? It took nearly an hour due to paperwork and language barriers. The staff were incredibly kind and apologetic, but the process was very slow.

Most of the time, I paid using Alipay.

Transportation

Inside Alipay, you can access DiDi, China’s ride-hailing app. Taxis are very affordable and incredibly convenient.

We used DiDi for nearly all transportation within cities.

For travel between cities, we mostly used China’s high-speed rail network.

High-Speed Trains

We booked most train tickets through Trip.com. They charge service fees, sometimes around 10$ per ticket.

I couldn’t access the official railway booking website, so I’m not sure whether it charges additional fees.

A few tips:

Arrive at the station at least 30 minutes early.
Security screening is required.
Keep your passport handy.
Your passport acts as your ticket and is scanned before entering the platform.
Foreign passport holders usually have a separate counter with a staff member who scans passports. The line is typically much shorter than the local passenger lines.
There is luggage storage at the end of each carriage or between carriages.
Second-class seats are spacious and very comfortable

Domestic flights are also available. I booked those through Trip.com as well.

Hotels

Most of our hotels and some attractions were booked through Trip.com.

One hotel was cheaper on Agoda, but generally Trip.com offered the best prices in China.

Many hotels provide free self-service laundry facilities.

Language

Chinese people were incredibly friendly and helpful.

Most people did not speak English, but they always tried to help using translation apps.

I mainly used Google Translate. You can type, speak, or even translate text directly from photos.

Food for Vegetarians

As a vegetarian, I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to find food.

Almost everywhere offered:

Vegetable noodles
Fried rice with vegetables
Tofu dishes
Vegetable stews

I also ate a lot of potatoes. Street vendors selling potatoes are everywhere, and even McDonald’s fries became a reliable option.

Food in China is very affordable. A huge bowl of noodles at a restaurant usually cost around 7$.

A lovely boutique hotel located near the Temple of Heaven.

FANG ZHUN CHANG

A Michelin-listed restaurant in the Qianmen area. Their vegetarian noodle dish was absolutely delicious 🤤 probably the best thing I ate during the entire trip.

SUHU Vegetarian Buffet

A fantastic vegetarian buffet with a huge variety of dishes and drinks included. Around 14$ per person.

Tiananmen Square

Advance registration is required and entry is free.

Since registration requires a Chinese phone number or WeChat account, I booked it through GetYourGuide for a small fee 👉🏻 Link

Expect long security lines, we waited nearly an hour.

Forbidden City

We walked directly from Tiananmen Square.

Tickets were purchased in advance through the official website 👉🏻 Link

Jingshan Park

Located directly opposite the Forbidden City.

From the hilltop, you get one of the best panoramic views over the entire Forbidden City. Highly recommended.

Great Wall – Mutianyu Section

We booked transportation through GetYourGuide.

The shuttle bus cost around 14$ and included transportation within the site.

Our guide purchased the entrance tickets for everyone.

Approximate costs:

Beautiful historic streets full of shops, restaurants, and atmosphere. One of my favorite areas in Beijing 😍

Temple of Heaven

Unfortunately, we arrived after the main site had closed and could only walk through the surrounding park.

I recommend visiting in the morning.

THE BOX Youth Energy Center

A trendy shopping mall with restaurants and stores.

Galaxy SOHO

An impressive shopping complex designed by Zaha Hadid.

Both malls are located close to each other.

Chengdu – The Panda City 🐼

A beautiful boutique hotel with an excellent location next to the city’s main shopping streets.

The pandas were the cutest thing ever 🥰

Arrive early in the morning and allow several hours to explore.

People’s Park

We experienced a traditional tea ceremony with kung-fu style tea pouring.

Watching locals enjoy tea, crack sunflower seeds, and even get ear-cleaning treatments was a fascinating cultural experience 😅

Kuanzhai Alleys

Charming historic streets packed with restaurants, shops, and local snacks.

The milk cookies were amazing.

Within walking distance of the park.

Sichuan Opera – Link

A fun one-hour performance featuring music, singing, acrobatics, and traditional acts.

Popcorn and tea were included.

SKP Mall & Bamboo Fountain

One of the most impressive malls I’ve ever visited 🤩

The mall is mostly underground, while the upper level features a park and a stunning illuminated bamboo fountain.

Arrive around sunset to enjoy the lights.

Lijiang – Yunnan 🏮🏔️

Paralloge Hotel

I booked this hotel through Trip.com, and it was one of the most memorable hotels of our entire trip 🥰

Located in the heart of Lijiang Old Town, the hotel combines beautiful design with exceptional hospitality. Each room is assigned a personal host who communicates with guests via WeChat and helps with anything you need during your stay.

What made this hotel truly special were the complimentary experiences included with the room:

‏A guided walking tour of the Old Town with your personal host
‏Traditional clothing that you can wear around town and use for photos
‏A traditional tea ceremony in the hotel lobby
‏Afternoon tea on the rooftop next to the pool, with stunning views of the Snow Mountain

A quick note: there are two hotels with the same name. One is a guesthouse and is less expensive. We stayed at the version with the swimming pool.

Restaurant

Sakura Restaurant 🌸

One of the most beautiful restaurants we visited in China.

The entire place is decorated with countless flowers, creating a magical atmosphere. We asked for vegetarian dishes and were served two incredibly delicious meals with rice 🤤

Lijiang Old Town

The highlight of Lijiang is simply wandering through its magical streets and alleyways.

Don’t miss:

The central restaurant area with rooftop performances

For photography, I highly recommend exploring early in the morning when the streets are quiet and nearly empty.

At night, the entire town transforms. The lanterns light up the streets, music fills the air, and the atmosphere becomes magical. During one evening visit, a large bonfire was lit in the main square and locals gathered around it to dance. I joined them, and it became one of my favorite memories from China 🥰

The town is packed with shops, restaurants, and hidden corners waiting to be explored.

An absolutely incredible place.

Black Dragon Pond Park

A peaceful park with a beautiful lake and spectacular views of the Snow Mountain in the background.

We took a DiDi from the Old Town and spent some time walking around the lake.

The scenery is lovely and very photogenic.

Entrance fee: approximately 17$.

Blue Moon Valley 💙

After visiting Black Dragon Pond Park, we took a DiDi to Blue Moon Valley, about 30 minutes from the Old Town.

We paid the entrance fee upon arrival. The taxi was stopped at the entrance gate so we could purchase tickets before entering.

This place is absolutely breathtaking 🤩

Located beneath the famous Snow Mountain, Blue Moon Valley features:

Crystal-clear turquoise lakes
Forest scenery
Waterfalls
Snow-capped mountain views

There is an easy walking trail that runs through several sections of the valley, making it suitable for most visitors.

If you plan to go up the mountain itself, you’ll need to arrange that in advance and reserve cable car tickets.

The valley alone is worth the trip. It was one of the most beautiful landscapes we saw in China 😍

Impressions of Lijiang Performance

I booked tickets through Trip.com for the show only.

Shuttle buses connect Blue Moon Valley, the visitor center, the cable car station, and the performance venue, making it easy to get around.

The theater is located directly across from the visitor center.

The performance was spectacular 👏🏻

The stage design is enormous, with the Snow Mountain serving as a dramatic natural backdrop. Hundreds of performers participate in the show, creating a visually stunning experience.

One important tip: it gets very hot during the performance. The sun can be intense, so bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water.

Mile – Yunnan 🎨🏨

This was one of the most architecturally impressive hotels we stayed at in China 🤩

The hotel is located directly opposite Dongfengyun Art Village and only a short ride from the train station.

The design is unique, artistic, and beautifully integrated into the surrounding landscape.

Dongfengyun Art Village

Located next to the hotel, this artistic village is one of Mile’s most famous attractions.

Hotel guests receive free admission and can use the complimentary shuttle service provided by the hotel.

The village is filled with stunning sculptural buildings and creative architectural spaces that feel almost surreal 😍

We arrived in Mile by train from Lijiang around midday, took a DiDi to the hotel, and then used the shuttle to reach the art village.

We spent several hours exploring both the village and the hotel grounds, taking countless photos.

The architecture alone makes this stop worthwhile.

Afterward, we returned to the hotel and enjoyed dinner there before continuing our journey through Yunnan. ✨

Stone Forest – Shilin 🌿⛰️

From Mile Railway Station, we took a 20-minute train ride to Shilin and then a DiDi to the Stone Forest, which took about 30 minutes.

The Stone Forest was one of the most unique natural attractions we visited in China 👌🏻

This massive UNESCO World Heritage Site is filled with dramatic limestone formations that resemble a forest made entirely of stone. The landscape feels almost otherworldly, with towering rock formations, winding pathways, and spectacular viewpoints.

There are several different walking routes throughout the park, ranging from shorter scenic walks to longer trails deeper into the stone formations.

We spent a few hours exploring the various sections of the park and were constantly amazed by how unusual and impressive the scenery was.

If you enjoy nature, photography, or unique geological landscapes, this is definitely worth a visit.

Overnight in Kunming 🚄

After visiting the Stone Forest, we returned the same way, collected our luggage from the hotel in Mile, and boarded a train to Kunming.

The journey took approximately 40 minutes.

We chose to spend the night in Kunming so we would be close to the railway station for our early morning train to Zhangjiajie.

Hotel

Ibis Kunming South Railway Station Hotel

A simple, comfortable, and budget-friendly hotel with an excellent location.

The hotel is within easy reach of the railway station, making it a convenient stopover before a long train journey.

One of the things we liked most was the area around the hotel. Right downstairs there was a lively food market, along with plenty of restaurants, cafés, and local entertainment options.

It was the perfect place for a short overnight stay before continuing our adventure.

The next stop on our journey was Zhangjiajie, where we spent five unforgettable days exploring some of the most spectacular landscapes in China – the inspiration behind the floating mountains in Avatar. 🏔️✨

Zhangjiajie – The Avatar Mountains 🏔️✨

Zhangjiajie was one of the absolute highlights of our trip. We spent five days exploring its breathtaking national parks, glass bridges, dramatic cliffs, and mountain landscapes that inspired the floating mountains in Avatar.

To make sightseeing easier, we split our stay between two hotels based on their proximity to the attractions we wanted to visit.

Hotels

Harmona Resort & Spa Zhangjiajie

We stayed here for three nights because it is conveniently located near the Avatar Mountains and the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge.

The resort is surrounded by beautiful nature and offers a peaceful retreat after long days of hiking. The décor is traditional Chinese style, slightly dated but full of character.

The property is quite large, and complimentary shuttle services operate within the resort. They also offer free shuttles to the Avatar Mountains and the Grand Canyon with advance reservation.

There is a dedicated English-speaking guest relations manager who communicates with international guests through WeChat and helps arrange transportation and activities.

The hotel restaurant was surprisingly good, with a singer performing live during dinner, creating a lovely atmosphere.

But the real highlight was relaxing in the heated outdoor pools surrounded by forest after a full day of walking 😍

Orange Hotel (Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain Ropeway Station)

For the final two nights, we stayed at this hotel because it is close to Tianmen Mountain, the famous “Stairway to Heaven,” the 72 Wonder Tower, and the train station.

The hotel has a beautiful modern design and an excellent location. The Tianmen Mountain cable car station is within walking distance, and there are plenty of restaurants and shops right outside.

It was also the perfect base for our afternoon trip to Furong Ancient Town.

Zhangjiajie is home to three major scenic areas, each offering a completely different experience.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park 🌿🏔️

The Avatar Mountains

This was the attraction I was most excited about, and it absolutely lived up to expectations 🥰

We reached the park using the hotel’s shuttle service and purchased tickets at the entrance. There are self-service ticket machines and staff members available to help.

The entrance ticket is valid for four days. We visited the park over two days.

The park is divided into two main areas:

The upper section, featuring breathtaking mountain-top walking trails
The lower section, with forest paths beneath the towering sandstone peaks

At the entrance, there are shuttle buses that connect all areas of the park.

Day 1 – Exploring the Lower Section

The weather was cloudy with poor visibility, so we decided to save the mountain viewpoints for another day.

The shuttle stops at several locations.

Ten Mile Gallery

The first stop is Ten Mile Gallery.

There is a small sightseeing train available, but we chose to walk alongside the tracks instead.

The scenery was beautiful, and we enjoyed taking our time through the valley.

Golden Whip Stream Area

The second stop was one of my favorite walks in the entire park.

The trail follows a river through dense forest beneath the Avatar Mountains.

The walk takes about an hour each way and is mostly flat and easy.

Instead of returning to the starting point, we exited through one of the park gates and took a local minibus back to the main entrance.

Day 2 – The Upper Section

The weather was much clearer, so we headed straight to the mountain viewpoints.

We took the shuttle to the famous Bailong Elevator.

The previous day was quiet, but the second day happened to be a holiday, and the crowds were enormous. We waited over an hour just to ride the elevator.

Once at the top, shuttle buses connect the various viewpoints.

We followed the signs toward the observation bridge and later continued toward the temple area.

The trails are relatively easy, but the scenery is absolutely spectacular 🤩

Towering stone pillars rise from the valleys below, creating landscapes unlike anywhere else in the world.

Because of the crowds, we eventually transferred to another shuttle toward Tianzi Mountain and descended by cable car.

The cable car ride itself was incredible, with stunning panoramic views of the mountains 😍

Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon 🌉

We reached the canyon using the resort’s shuttle service.

This attraction combines spectacular scenery with several optional adventure activities.

The route begins by crossing the world’s highest glass-bottom bridge.

Standing on the transparent floor high above the canyon is definitely an unforgettable experience 😅

After crossing the bridge, there is another short transparent walkway with fantastic views.

From there, visitors can choose how to descend into the canyon:

Elevator (our choice)
Zipline

There are also VR experiences available along the route.

We took the elevators down and later chose to ride the mountain slide to the river below.

The slide was so much fun 😁

From there, an easy walking trail follows the river through the canyon.

We paid extra for a short boat ride, but honestly, I would skip it. It lasted only about five minutes and wasn’t particularly special. A longer boat ride is already included at the end of the main walking route.

Along the trail, you’ll also pass through a small stalactite cave.

The scenery throughout the canyon is beautiful and the entire experience was great fun 👌🏻

Tianmen Mountain

Our second hotel was only a ten-minute walk from the entrance.

You can actually see the cable cars from the hotel.

We purchased tickets on-site and chose Route A.

The experience begins with an incredibly long and very high cable car ride.

After exiting the cable car station at the summit, there are two possible directions.

Make sure to turn left toward the famous Stairway to Heaven.

A short walking trail leads to a series of escalators, lots and lots of escalators 😄 which eventually bring you to the top of the legendary staircase.

From there, you can either walk down the stairs or take additional escalators for an extra fee.

The views from the plaza are stunning 🤩

One of the best surprises was staying until evening.

After sunset, the staircase and surrounding mountains are illuminated, creating a spectacular scene 😍

This lighting display takes place after the official attraction closing time, so don’t leave too early.

Bring warm clothing. Even if it’s hot in the city below, temperatures at the summit can be surprisingly cold.

72 Wonder Tower ✨

I absolutely loved this place 🥰

Tickets can be purchased on-site. The ticket office is located inside the building to the left of the entrance.

I highly recommend visiting in the evening and staying until closing time.

The complex is filled with:

Restaurants
Shops
Entertainment venues
Cultural performances

The main building is stunning, especially after dark when it is illuminated.

Near closing time, performers gathered around a large bonfire for a traditional dance show.

The atmosphere was fantastic 🤩

Furong Ancient Town 🌊🏮

Furong was one of the most charming towns we visited in China.

It can easily be reached by high-speed train from Zhangjiajie.

The train ride takes only 23 minutes to Furongzhen Railway Station.

From the station, you’ll need to take a taxi to the Old Town. When we visited, local drivers were not using DiDi, so we negotiated the fare directly.

An entrance ticket is required to enter the historic area.

The town is built around a spectacular waterfall, and one of the highlights is a pathway that actually passes behind the waterfall 😍

We spent hours wandering through the narrow streets, exploring viewpoints, shops, and restaurants.

Near the entrance, there is a stage where cultural performances take place.

The town becomes even more magical after sunset, when colorful lights illuminate the waterfall and surrounding buildings 🤩

I highly recommend arriving in the afternoon and staying until dark.

We visited Furong on the same day as the Grand Canyon. After returning from the canyon, we collected our luggage, transferred to our second hotel, and then headed to the train station for the short journey to Furong.

Yangshuo – Karst Mountains & River Views 🌄🚣

Yangshuo Sugar House

This was one of the most beautiful hotels of the trip 😍

The hotel is housed inside a former sugar factory that has been transformed into a stunning luxury property.

Its location is spectacular, surrounded by mountains and overlooking the river 🥰

The hotel is somewhat isolated from the town center, so we used DiDi whenever we wanted to go out. Fortunately, rides are inexpensive.

The hotel also offers complimentary activities.

We joined:

A morning Tai Chi class
A candy-making workshop

Yoga classes are offered on alternating days as well.

Guilin Romance Park 🎭

We purchased tickets at the entrance.

The show was absolutely incredible 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

The park itself is beautiful and full of shops and restaurants.

Before the main performance begins, there is a smaller lakeside show featuring fireworks, fire effects, and flyboarding stunts 🤩

The main production is spectacular and one of the most impressive performances we saw in China.

As guests leave the venue, another fire show takes place outside.

We loved every minute of it.

Ruyi Peak 🚡

We took a DiDi from the hotel and purchased tickets at the entrance.

The experience begins with a cable car ride high into the mountains 😅

At the summit, a scenic walking trail crosses two suspension bridges between the peaks.

The views are absolutely stunning 😍

Li River & Ten Mile Gallery 🚣

We took a DiDi to the Ten Mile area.

There is a bridge overlooking the river where the famous bamboo raft rides finish.

The view is beautiful, and there are excellent photo opportunities from several observation points below.

Visitors over 70 years old and young children are not allowed on the smaller bamboo rafts.

However, larger rafts on the opposite side of the road accommodate all ages.

We purchased tickets on-site.

The ride itself is fairly short, but the scenery throughout the area is gorgeous.

West Street 🏮

The heart of Yangshuo.

A lively pedestrian street packed with shops, restaurants, cafés, and street food.

The atmosphere is fun, vibrant, and perfect for an evening stroll after a day of sightseeing. ✨

Shanghai – The Perfect Finale ✨🏙️

Shanghai was the final stop on our three-week adventure through China, and it was the perfect way to end the trip. After exploring mountains, ancient towns, and natural wonders, Shanghai amazed us with its futuristic architecture, vibrant food scene, and unique blend of tradition and innovation.

Mercure Shanghai Yu Garden On the Bund

A lovely hotel with beautiful design and a great location.

It is about a 10-minute walk from Yu Garden, making it a convenient base for exploring the historic part of the city.

Restaurants & Cafés

No. 3 Warehouse

One of the most unique restaurants we visited in China 🤩

The interior feels futuristic and incredibly creative, while the food is beautifully presented and delicious.

A word of warning: the restaurant is extremely popular. We waited nearly two hours for a table.

Reservations are not available, so when you arrive, take a queue number and spend some time exploring the mall and surrounding area while you wait.

XUYAN

A traditional dining experience combined with live performances between courses.

The setting is absolutely magical, and reservations are required in advance.

There are separate lunch and dinner sessions.

As a vegetarian, I had contacted the restaurant beforehand and confirmed my dietary requirements. Unfortunately, my vegetarian dishes were not served together with the rest of the group at first, which was disappointing because part of the experience is enjoying the meal simultaneously with everyone else.

However, the staff apologized and later brought out several specially prepared vegetarian dishes that were absolutely delicious.

If you have dietary restrictions, I highly recommend speaking with the staff again upon arrival and clearly confirming exactly what you do and do not eat. This will help ensure your meal is served at the right time alongside everyone else’s.

Nudake Haus Nowhere

A fascinating space that combines a café, art installations, and retail stores.

The main attraction is its giant croissant-themed installations, including a gym-inspired display and two enormous robot heads.

It’s quirky, creative, and definitely worth a visit.

Holiland Travel

A futuristic bakery filled with delicious pastries, cakes, and desserts.

The design is almost as impressive as the food itself.

Shangyin Shenghuoshui World ♨️

We purchased tickets at the entrance.

This spa complex was one of the most relaxing experiences of the trip.

The facility includes:

A unique swimming pool
Multiple saunas
Relaxation areas
Sleeping pods

The admission ticket also includes unlimited access to:

Drinks
Fruit
Ice cream
Snacks
One buffet meal

The complex is open 24 hours a day, and some guests even stay overnight.

We chose the six-hour admission option and had a fantastic time 😁

Yu Garden 🌿

One of Shanghai’s most beautiful historic sites.

We purchased tickets at the entrance.

The garden itself is peaceful, elegant, and full of traditional Chinese architecture.

Outside the garden, you’ll find historic streets lined with traditional buildings, shops, restaurants, and tea houses.

The entire area is lively, beautiful, and highly recommended 👌🏻

North Bund Greenland 🌆

One of the best places to enjoy Shanghai’s iconic skyline.

There is a popular photo spot featuring a mirrored oval sculpture that perfectly frames the famous skyline and the Oriental Pearl Tower in the background.

There is usually a short queue for photos, but it’s worth the wait.

1000 Trees 🌳

An impressive architectural landmark that looks like a forest growing out of a building.

The structure is covered with tree-like concrete columns and planters, creating one of the most distinctive designs in Shanghai.

The best photo spot is from the bridge across the river.

There is also a riverside promenade and park nearby.

While there isn’t much to do beyond admiring the architecture and taking photos, it is definitely worth a quick stop.

Final Thoughts ❤️

This was truly a perfect trip 👌🏻

China completely exceeded my expectations.

It is a fascinating blend of:

Rich history and culture
Stunning natural landscapes
Cutting-edge technology

From the ancient streets of Lijiang and Furong, to the Avatar Mountains of Zhangjiajie, the peaceful rivers of Yangshuo, and the futuristic skyline of Shanghai, every destination offered something unique and unforgettable.

China is one of the most diverse and surprising countries I have ever visited, and I would happily return again 🥰
