Four days in Lapland – Rovaniemi, Finland | February 2023

A real Winter Wonderland

We flew to Rovaniemi in February with cheap connecting flights via London:

Wizz Air to London, and then EasyJet from London Gatwick Airport to Rovaniemi.

We traveled with only a carry-on suitcase and a backpack – and it was enough.

🧥 Clothing

We mainly packed:

Thermal layers
Fleece jackets and sweatpants
One ski pants
Touch gloves, neck warmer, hat, and a winter coat

We bought most of the thermal clothing at Decathlon.

In practice, it wasn’t as cold as expected, and the gear provided during activities was more than sufficient.

🏠 Accommodation

We stayed for 3 nights in an Airbnb apartment:

A modern, beautifully designed place with a private sauna 🔥

About a 10-minute walk from the city center – great location and a very nice host. Highly recommended.

We booked 3 activities with them:

Northern Lights chase 🌌
Snowmobiling 🛷
Night ice floating in a frozen lake ❄️

Warm thermal gear is provided for all activities.

Everything was extremely well organized and highly recommended.

🧊 Frozen waterfalls tour

A perfect day trip with stunning frozen landscapes and a great guide.

We used the discount code BEN10 for 10% off (found via Instagram/Facebook).

🏛 Museum

Arktikum

A nice museum that gives background about the region and Arctic life.

We started our trip here to understand the area before heading into the experiences.

🎅 Santa Claus Village

On our last day we visited Santa Claus Village

A very touristy but fun experience:

Sending postcards from Santa’s official post office 📮

Husky sled ride 🐕
Festive Christmas atmosphere all year round

We took a bus from the city center (about €4).

You can store luggage there for €5 per bag.

From the village, we took a short bus ride back to the airport (€8).

🍽️ Restaurants in Rovaniemi

All the restaurants are located in the city center of Rovaniemi, very close to the activity providers and easy to reach on foot.

🍔 Pure Burger

A burger restaurant with solid options, including vegetarian choices.
Casual, quick, and convenient between activities.

🍷 Gustav

A fine dining restaurant with a creative menu and unique dishes.
Highly recommended to book in advance.
Located right across from Safartica – very convenient if you’re doing tours with them.

🧇 21 Café

Specializes in savory waffles with different toppings – meat, fish, and vegetarian options.
Really tasty and great for a relaxed meal 😋
Located opposite Wild About Lapland.

🪵 Nili

A traditional local food restaurant with a cozy cabin-style design.
Requires advance reservation.
Also located across from Safartica.
Great place to try authentic Lapland cuisine.

🌌 Northern Lights – a lucky final night

On our last night, we were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights again, this time near Arktikum.

There’s a popular viewing area by the river, where many people gather.
When the sky is clear and cloud-free, it becomes an amazing viewing spot.

The sky lit up and glowed for a long time 🤩 , an unforgettable moment.
